the horse he died of natural causes so you,
you should not cry
but you will
and you will remember his name
for days and days and days before it is replaced

3 black birds came down from the tree
early in the morning too early for me
4 came alookin' for feed
and i wonder where they sleep
and i know
i know cause the black bird told me so
the sky it is grey
cause tennessee burns all the coal
5 black birds came sat on the step
waiting for me to write them a check
6 black birds came in through the door
feathers in the air and shit on the floor
and i know
that i black bird can be wise
and i would tell you
but the black birds givin me the eye
i know cause the black bird told me so

i had but a stone, to wish in the well
kissed and wished for all intentions audible
to be melodies
so i could hear
what you
were trying
to say to me
blah blah blah blah blah
if time is water and memories sand
digging moats round the castle again
i once had a friend
named michael williamson
he lived by his poetry
but i lost him
when the tide came in
so i put all of my hopes in a metal box,
flammable liquid and 10 pairs of socks
and we left to see the world
before it all got trashed
but when we came back all the photographs
were of you
and of me
exactly the same
but in different scenes
scenes that care for no one darling
scenes that are the backdrop of millions of smiling
amateur photographers and what could we ever hope
to take of her

there is comfort while you sleep
there is comfort in a city full of greed
beginning again in tennessee
beginning again at 17
while i'm working for a wage
or laying prostrate on the bedsheets left unmade
i'm making all these plans for my spare change
a penny in my pocket for rainy day

for your shelf

i wanted to make something that was pretty
a thing for your shelf your collection of things
that you see in the morning as you open your eyes
and are blinking awake from a dream
i wanted you eyes to fall upon this thing
and assiociate its pretty with me
and think that i must be making pretty things
where ever i happen to be
when you have left
i will try to feed myself
and i would say that i will try to fold my clothes
but you know that i probably wont
and when you go
i will be a sad sack of shit
and all of the love notes
that i have wrote
will sleep in an envelope

i dreamt of paris
01:38
|
|||
you know when we went away my love
we finally left home my love
we rode the current out of
a sea of shit and oil
and the gulf stream took us
the ride was cold and swift
to the moorings of paris
and there we float adrift
but where would you rather be
penniless and across the sea
or safe at home with mother dear
drowning in a sea of tears
and where would you rather be
wet and cold and shoplifting
or growing fat and learning hate
nestled in the southern states
and while i was dreaming
the answers weren't clear
the morning was grey as well
but i know that i love you my dear
